As week six of the PLL’s inaugural season headed to the nation’s capital, the Chrome found themselves sitting at the bottom of the standings winless through five games. Out of their five losses four had come by a single goal, and the other by just two.
“I think at that point in the season we were really frustrated,” Chrome midfielder Jordan MacIntosh said. “We felt like we had put some good games together, we had put ourselves in a position to win, and we weren’t closing out games in the fourth quarter. We were going into fourth quarters with leads, or having leads with a couple minutes left and a couple bad turnovers on offense, couple of goals against and next thing you know we were 0-5.”
Their opponent for week six was none other than they Chaos who had just beaten the Chrome the week before 15-14 courtesy of Deemer Class’s overtime goal. During that game the Chrome dug back from a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game.
“I think us coming back and getting to overtime with them was, as much as it sucks, it was a sign that , okay we can beat these guys,” MacIntosh said.
With the defeat fresh in their minds the Chrome set out to change the result, focusing on getting a fast start. Led by MacIntosh, the Chrome jumped out to a 9-4 victory at half, cruising to a 19-11 victory at Audi Field.
MacIntosh had one of his best games of the season in the victory, notching five goals to go along with a pair of assists.
“My first goal I scored was kind of like a behind the net dunk. Honestly when that went in I was like “oh this might be a good day”…Largely when I’m putting up numbers like that I’m just benefitting from the guys around me,” MacIntosh remembered.
Jordan Wolf (6 pts), Justin Guterding (4 pts), and Ned Crotty (4 pts) also had big afternoons for the Chrome as they stopped a five-game losing streak.
“We have a lot of competitive guys that are used to winning,” MacIntosh said. “In my professional career that’s definitely the most that I’ve ever lost. It was frustrating, it was nice to get the win, and we were hoping we’d get a couple more after that.”
Chrome finished the PLL’s first year with a record of 2-8, with the other win coming over the Whipsnakes in week 8.
