MLL delays 2020 season in response to COVID-19 pandemic

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced it is delaying its 2020 season in response to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The decision was made and after coordination with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and state and local officials.

“This decision was made to safeguard the health of our players, fans and staff, as well as those within our MLL communities as a result of the global pandemic,” MLL Commissioner Alexander Brown said. “We have been vigilant in coordinating with the CDC, as well as federal, state and local officials to determine the protocols that will allow us to begin our season in the safest manner possible. So as to ensure the well-being of all MLL communities, we will be guided by their recommendations.”

The league’s 20th season was originally slated to start on May 30. A new start date is currently still being determined.

“While the current situation remains fluid, the MLL family has a history of working together for the greater good. At no time should this be more evident than now,” Brown said. “The league recognizes the hard work and sacrifice of our players as they have prepared for this season. In an effort to help shoulder this burden, MLL has developed a fund to assist players in the event that we are unable to conduct a season in 2020.”

The MLL is just one of several professional leagues that have been affected by the spread of COVID-19 in North America. In March, the National Lacrosse League (NLL) suspended its season indefinitely with no re-start date determined.

“We remain hopeful and look forward to taking the field as soon as practically possible for our 20th season. In the coming weeks, we will keep fans updated on decisions regarding plans for the 2020 season” Brown adds. “We are grateful to all MLL communities for their support, and we extend our thoughts to those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 virus.”
