A Denver Outlaws home game has become a sort of tradition in the Mile High City for July 4. Since 2006 the MLL club has hosted Mile High July, featuring an Outlaws game followed by fireworks. Each year the game has drawn more than 25,000 fans, but July 4, 2015 was one for the record books.
With the Boston Cannons in town the Outlaws packed an MLL record 31,644 fans into Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Despite the record crowd at their back the Outlaws saw a 22-goal outburst from the Cannons. The Outlaws broke their previous record, also set during a Mile High July. Since the team’s inception, Denver has drawn more than 30,000 fans on three different occasions during the Independence Day celebration.
Drew Snider led Denver during the record-breaking loss with four goals, while David Emala was the star of the night, scoring six times for the Cannons.
While there will be no July 4 game in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Denver Outlaws and MLL will return on July 18 for a one-week 2020 season and the hope is to continue the Mile High tradition in future seasons.
