Chaos trade their top PLL draft pick Matt Gaudet to Chrome

With the 2020 PLL College Draft in the books, coaches and teams are now looking to solidify who they’re going to roster for the Championship Series later this summer. Tuesday afternoon, the Chrome and Chaos made a move that helps both teams fill out their rosters.

The league announced that Matt Gaudet, the fifth overall pick in the College Draft, had been traded to Chrome LC for the 17th overall pick in the 2021 draft. The Chrome had acquired this pick in the trade that sent Romar Dennis and the 20th overall pick to the Atlas.

Matt Gaudet had just been selected in the first round by Coach Andy Towers, but he faced an uphill battle for playing time with the depth of the Chaos attack, that could potentially feature Cornell attackman Jeff Teat. Gaudet now figures to be a starter for Chrome, joining an attack line that already featured Jordan Wolf and Justin Guterding, his former teammate at Salisbury School in Connecticut.

Gaudet was the third leading goal scorer in Yale history with 142 goals before joining the PLL. Coach Towers has made no secret that he is confident in his current roster and excited about the depth the draft class of 2021 provides, and must have felt inclined to continue bolstering his stock of picks for next years class.

Chaos now possess the 17th pick, as well the Redwoods second round pick, which was originally slated for the 2020 draft, but was moved due to the unique circumstances of this years draft.

The trade comes just several hours after the league announced via Inside Lacrosse that it had extended the trade window to June 12 to allow coaches an opportunity to assess and shape their rosters in preparation for this summer’s PLL Championship series. Coaches will also have the opportunity to sign players from the PLL player pool during a waiver period on June 15 and 16.

The next several weeks, coaches will have to narrow their rosters to 25 players and will then name its 22-man travel roster for the tournament. Each team’s final 25-man roster must be submitted by June 30. If a player is not on a 25-man roster, he will go back into the player pool and will be ineligible to participate in the tournament.
