Redwoods LC: How will John Grant Jr. change the offense?
The story of the Redwoods offseason was the addition of John Grant Jr. to the coaching staff. Coaches in professional lacrosse don’t always make the biggest impact, but this hire seemed to indicate a shift to the offensive philosophy.
The Woods added Eli McLaughlin and brought back a pair of former Denver Outlaws in Ryan Lee and Wes Berg to the offensive unit. These additions and Grant’s presence imply a more box-style offensive approach for the Redwoods this season.
Box-style offenses are a proven commodity in the PLL. Chaos and Waterdogs both won championships with a heavy Canadian influence on offense, and the Redwoods made some moves this offseason to match that. But the Woods still have a lot of interesting fits if that’s the style of offense this team wants to play.
Rob Pannell, Myles Jones and Sergio Perkovic are more traditional, field lacrosse players who have thrived dodging from X and shooting from range respectively. These are all talented players, but the way these lineups shake out and fit together under Junior’s offense will define the season. Redwoods finished third-last in scoring a year ago, and that needs to change to get back to the championship game.
