The Championship defense begins, and their Championship roster stays almost completely intact. One of the world’s best shooters, Ryan Brown, is retiring as a champion, but luckily for the Dogs, they’ll be replacing him with one of the world’s angriest shooters, Jake Carraway. Besides this, only temporary changes for the good-boys.
Jake Withers is on the Holdout List, which indicates he will be out at least a few weeks. Rookie James Reilly and second year Zac Tucci will have to hold it down in his absence, and wing vacuums Zach Currier and Ryland Rees will give them some assistance. LSM Chris Sabia and midfielder Mikie Schlosser are on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but will return to action at some point. All-World Goalie Dillon Ward will miss the first game of the season due to the NLL Finals, but Matt DeLuca would play in his place to start a second straight year.
Those who have followed the college game over the past few years will know all the names they’ve drafted and these will only add to the depth of this championship roster.
The Waterdogs 2022 title run was streaky: three losses, followed by five wins, then two losses and ending with three straight playoff wins. This team is not a powerhouse, but now that they know there is no ceiling to their potential, I expect the Dogs to show up to their 2023 campaign with a swagger and confidence. Let’s hope they keep that grit and that dawg, because they are going from the hunter to the hunted.
