The reigning champions only added to their title defense in Tuesday’s draft. Head coach Andy Copelan doubled down on some of the traits that led to the Waterdogs championship last season.
First round selection Thomas McConvey is a slick lefty attackman who will fit in seamlessly alongside Kieran McArdle, Ethan Walker and Zach Currier. In a post Ryan Brown world, the Waterdogs need more goals, and McConvey will provide that.
Copelan pivoted to defense to fill out the depth. Last season, defensive depth was an issue at times as the Waterdogs battled injuries. Second rounder Alex Mazzone shot up draft boards after an impressive senior season with Johns Hopkins, and he provides strong positional versatility.
Notre Dame defenseman Chris Fake adds another talented pole on the back end. He’s a strong cover defenseman who can supplement Ben Randall throughout the season.
The Waterdogs were also smart to pick up faceoff depth with the last pick of the draft. Star faceoff specialist Jake Withers was moved to the holdout list and might not be available this season. Georgetown’s James Reilly should provide good depth behind and competition for Zac Tucci at the stripe without Withers.
After a strong offseason, there’s no reason the Dogs can’t contend for the championship again this season.
Best Pick: Alex Mazzone (Defense), Johns Hopkins (2nd Round)
