Cannons Lacrosse Club
There’s only so much Cannons head coach Brian Holman could do in his first PLL draft. The previous regime left Holman with just a second and fourth round pick to rebuild last season’s last place team in the league.
Despite missing out on the draft’s top talent, Cannons landed an excellent consolation prize in Villanova midfielder Matt Campbell. Campbell was seen as a first round talent heading into the draft, and he’s the type of all-around offensive midfielder Cannons can build around.
Holman snagged High Point defenseman Grant Ammann with the first pick in the fourth round. While not a household name, Ammann was one of the best defensive players in the Atlantic 10 this season. He led the conference in caused turnovers and was top 10 in ground balls.
The only criticism of this draft is that Cannons didn’t do more to acquire draft capital. It can be tough to move pieces around to get extra picks, and it’s impossible to know what the trade market looks like. But at the end of the day, two draft picks for a 1-9 team is not a great way to start a rebuild.
Best Pick: Matt Campbell (Midfield), Villanova (2nd Round)
Overall Grade: B
